What does a Pastor DO anyway!? (Part 1)

I cannot tell you how many times I have been asked this question or some variation of it. My favorite is, "You only work Sundays, right?" or, "What's your REAL job?"

These questions don't bother me at all. It's when I start telling people what I do during the week that causes there eyeballs to gloss over and there lips just barely utter the words, "Oh...uh huh...cool." If you don't want to know, why did you ask? Or maybe it's just not that exciting of an answer? Honestly it's a lot of desk work, computer time, making phone calls, having meetings, and spending time with people. Now your eyes are glossy.

So I thought it would be mildly entertaining if I catalogued all that I do, in regards to pastoring, for a week! Starting now!

7:30am-8am: Getting the Mac ready to show the video for men's group.

8am-9:15am: Spending some with some awesome guys at men's group. We are going through "33 the series: Authentic Manhood." Today was Chapter 2 and it was AMAZING!

1pm-1:30pm: Attend a birthday party for someone in the church! This is something I would go to even if I was not a pastor. However, people do appreciate it when pastors go to weddings, funerals and parties no matter how well you know the people involved. I talk to a lot of people who don't want to give up their time on the weekend unless they know someone well. I have found that people appreciate your presence more than you might know. Even if that means interrupting your schedule for them! Hey, there's a sermon in that. Besides, much of the people in the church have become like family to me! It's great celebrating milestones and achievements with them.

2pm-5pm: Time for the Moxie Pumpkin Party! What is this? The 9th-12th graders meet at the church and we go to the Community Orchard to ride the hayride and to PICK PUMPKINS! From there it's back to the church to have snacks, hang out and SMASH SOME PUMPKINS! I know what you are thinking..."that's work?" Yes. Yes it is. Smashing pumpkins is hard work.

5:15pm-7pm: Attend an anniversary party for someone in the church! They have been married for 65 years! It was awesome! There was some live country music too. Good times!

7:30pm-8:30pm: I take some time to review my sermon for tomorrow and make any necessary adjustments! I also go over the order of service and make sure that I am prepared for the morning. Tomorrow we have baptisms and communion! It's gonna be insanely fun!

That was it for today!
