Super, Wonderful, Crazy, Fun Time.
"If you enjoy what you do, you'll never work another day in your life." Confucius, the Chinese philosopher, is attributed with this quote. I am sure you have heard it many times before and maybe it is something that you are trying to achieve in your life. I think it's a great saying, and I get the message it conveys, but honestly work sometimes feels like...well, work.
Red Forman (Kurtwood Smith) from that 70's show has a different thought about work. "Work is Work. You don't show up late, you don't make excuses, and you don't not work. If it wasn't work they wouldn't call it work. They'd call it super, wonderful, crazy, fun time." I think most people would probably agree with Red that you don't show up late, or make excuses, or do a poor job. However, I think it is possible to have fun at work!
So what's work suppose to look like? Should it always be enjoyable or should it feel like work? I think the answer is obvious. Work should be enjoyable AND sometimes it will feel like work. Work is not one or the other but both.
I thoroughly enjoy my job. I laugh with my co-workers and enjoy working together as a team. I like the things that I do during the week because I feel like I am skilled and qualified to do those things well. Time goes fast when I'm at work, so you know I'm having fun.
There are also times when work feels like work. This happens when my week is over-booked and I don't have time to focus on my usual tasks. There are decisions that only I can make and that puts pressure on me to make the right decision. There are still aspects of my job that I no longer enjoy doing and it now feels more like work.
Colossians 3:23-25 comforts me in all of this. "Servants, do what you’re told by your earthly masters. And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you’re serving is Christ. The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. Being a follower of Jesus doesn’t cover up bad work."
When it comes to work I want to do my best. I want to work not only for money, or an earthly boss, but for my real Master God. Whether I want to do a task or not, I choose to do it with joy!
How about you? I think this attitude of working for God will give you a more enjoyable attitude towards work each and every day. Even if work feels like work you can find joy in knowing that you are serving God with the good work you are doing.
My prayer for us is that we would enjoy the work that God gives us to do and that we would serve Him in all that we do.
Until Monday, Josh
