Depending on the study you read, there are around 350,000-400,000 churches in America. Some say that number is shrinking and others say it is growing. There are over 50 churches just in my hometown of 25,000 people. It's safe to say that there are a lot of churches in the United States.
Let me tell you about another number. That number is 443,000.
There are approximately 443,000 kids in foster care right now. At this moment in time, there are hundreds of thousands of children not living with their parents.
How are these two numbers related? Well, they aren't directly related.
However, the churches in this nation could make sure every single foster kiddo has a safe place to live while removed from their parents care. If one or two families in every church would welcome a foster kid into the home, all of them would have a place to go!
As it stands right now, where I live, we need twice as many foster homes in order to take care of all the kids. Many kids have to leave their families, school, friends, and city. What can be done about this problem? I'm glad you asked!
For starters, you can pray about becoming a foster or adoptive parent! My wife and I have been foster parents for almost two years now. It has been a rewarding and humbling experience.
If being a full-time foster parent that sounds intimidating, you could always become a respite foster parent. When you provide respite for other families, you welcome a child or two into your home for a predetermined amount of time. For example, if a foster family goes on vacation for 10 days and needs someone to watch a foster kid or two, you might get a call!
The process to become a foster parent is rigorous and loaded with paperwork, but it's definitely worth it in the end.
If neither one of these seem like something you would be interested in, and you don't have any desire to take the classes, then you could always start with prayer. Pray for those in foster care and pray that there would be enough homes for all of the kids. You could also help foster families in some practical ways.
You could deliver meals, make a quilt/blanket for the kids, purchase clothes and donate them to your nearest Kaden's Kloset, offer to babysit, or purchase a fun activity for the whole family! There are so many ways that you can help! As followers of Christ, we are called to help those in distress!
James 1:26–27 (NLT) “If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. 27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”
